Bailey - Retired

January 23rd, 2010

This gorgeous girl is around 6-7 years old.  Her owner got put in a retirement home and Bailey got put in a shelter.  We had her brought to St. Louis.  She has a bad back and takes a little longer to get up.  One the bright side, she loves her pillow and taking short walks.  What a sweetheart.

Glassie - Heart Murmur

January 23rd, 2010

Glassie came in with her sister ShaynaShayna has a bad case of heartworms that we are treating.  Glassie has a grade 3 heart murmur (bad).  She is 4 years old and will probably live another 18-24 months.   Glassie and Shayna came to us tethered in the bad of a pickup truck.

Paxtyn - Doodle

Paxtyn - Liver Shunt
Paxtyn - Liver Shunt

You ought to see the feet on this little girl.  She is almost 4 months old and weighs 12 lbs.  She has a Liver Shunt and is going to need surgery.  We have completed the ultrasound and have identified the area that the surgeon would be working.  If we do not do the surgery, she will in all probability not see her 2nd birthday.  If we can get the surgery done, she should live a normal life.

Sara is Safe

Back Home Again

Back Home Again

Sara was returned to us by her adoptive family when their circumstances changed.  She had no idea why someone would give her up but we made her comfortable in her own room at the shelter.  She greeted everyone that came in to the shelter and we all felt bad for her.  Just look at that face.  We made a “coat” for her because she had been shaved and would literally shiver when she went outside.  A family whose pet had passed away came in and met Sara.  They could not leave without her.  Last time that we saw her, she was laying on their couch with her head in her daddy’s lap watching football.  She is safe.

Carmen Comes Home

December 26th, 2009
Carmen - Santa Hat
Carmen - Santa Hat

Carmen was adopted out 3 times.  Not one return was her fault.  She was returned the last and final time this year when she was about 13+ years old.  We had her teeth cleaned and made her comfortable.  Apparently-too comfortable.  She sleeps under my desk on “her pillow”.  She knows when breakfast and dinner is and lets you know if you are even a little late.  Everyday is an miracle for her and we treasure them one day at a time.  She got a healthy certificate from her veterinarian.  Someone from New York that saw her on our website painted a hat on her.  She thinks that it makes her look younger :-)

Riley and Ben want to wish Anna & Patrick McCarthy a great future together.  A donation was made in honor of all of the wedding guests (not just Riley & Ben).  Thank you for making Anna & Patrick’s day even more special.

Ginger is 11 Years Old

August 2nd, 2009

Ginger was adopted out around 11 years ago.  She was a puppy.  She is less than 40 lbs and was turned in to Animal Control.  She has 3 or 4 teeth and was covered with fleas.  We are treating her flea bites and got her all of her shots.   Our covenant with these critters is that they always have a home.  Apparently, it was too complicated for her owner to make a phone call.

Highway-Tied To Post on 270

July 27th, 2009

This little guy was found tied to the Missouri-Illinois sign on Highway 270 just off of the Chain of Rocks Bridge.  He had a bowl and a blanket.  We are amazed that he is still alive.  He rides well in the car.  He walks well on a leash.  His veterinarians have commented on how easy he is to work with.  What would possess someone to do this to such a nice critter?

April - 1 Less Kidney

June 29th, 2009

Dirks Fund received a call about a young golden retriever that was leaking urine.  The shelter could not afford to explore what to do for her and their only option was putting her to sleep.  We asked our veterinarian if she would explore the options with a surgeon.  She will be without one kidney but ,otherwise, she is fine.  She is only about 1 year old.  She can thank a shelter that called us and a very good surgeon for her new life.  She was being given a bath in this picture.

Monte’s Cataract Surgery

May 18th, 2009

Monte is back with his owner and seeing well OUT OF BOTH EYES.  He is now motivating JP to get better so that they can go walking.  Dirk’s Fund would like to thank Midwest Veterinary Referral Center and Dr’s Cecil Moore and Juri Ota-Kuroki, ophthalmologists at MVRC, for their care and expertise in restoring Monte’s vision.  Although, funds were raised for Monte’s surgery, MVRC and its doctors provided all of the pre-operative evaluations, the cataract surgery, and the post-op care at no cost.   This will allow those funds raised for Monte to cover any of his additional medical needs.

06/04/09 Wednesday.  Monte is going home to J.P. and we will have the video.  This critter has not seen his home or J.P. for around 4 years.  We are sure that he will recognize J.P.’s voice and then the reunion should be one to remember for both.

05/27/09 Monte had his checkup by Dr Moore and The Doctor was thrilled with his progress.  His eye medication is now given 2 times a day - instead of 3 times a day.  His head cone is off and he is “ready to rock”.  We are probably going to reunite him and J.P. in about a week - stay tuned !
05/26/09 We took as video of Monte in his Suite at the Pacific Animal Hospital.  This week he gets his first checkup from the surgeons that did his cataract surgery.  He would love to go home soon. Monte On Video

05/20/08 We are going top pick up Monte at MVRC at 10:00 AM and bring him to the Pacific Animal Hospital for some rehab.  He will stay there for about 2-3 weeks and then a reunion with JP his owner is planned for June.  His surgery was a success and he can see out of both eyes.  It was great to see him “walk” into the van and “step up” over the curb.  He is enjoying a “suite” at the Pacific Animal Hospital and 3 female veterinary techs to care for him.  He may not want to leave :-)

05/17/09 Sunday.  Monte was brought to the Midwest Veterinary Referral Center in Chesterfield for his overnight before his surgery to correct the blindness in both of his eyes.  Dr Cecil Moore and Dr Juri Ota-Kuroki are coming in from the University of Missouri to perform the surgery on Monday (05.18.09).  We will update this blog as we learn more and get more pictures
