Fostering

Not all of our dogs adapt well to living in a shelter and do best with a foster program. For instance, many of the retired breeders do not have the socialization skills to be immediately adopted and fit into a family environment. In your home, they can learn to be a real dog! If we take in a dog that comes from a home they are often anxious in the shelter and thrive much better in a foster situation. Or, a dog with certain health requirements can receive more individual attention.

What does a foster do?
As a Dirk’s foster, you would care for the dog in your home as if they were your own. Dirk’s Fund will pick up the tab for all vet expenses, including heartworm and flea prevention. However, you would be responsible for taking the Dirk’s dog to the vet when needed. If a potential adopter is interested in your foster dog, you would bring the dog to our Pacific location for a meet and greet, and bring him or her back if the adoption becomes a reality. If you decide you just can’t give up your foster dog, you receive $100 off any adoption fee.
